From Ordinary to Extraordinary

Ever had a bad day at work where by the end of the day you just felt so tired, moody and listless?

On such days, go to a Toastmasters meeting, guaranteed, you’ll soon feel uplifted, zestful and energized. You’d come home wondering, what happened, what changed from bad to great? What’s extraordinary about these meetings?

Toastmasters meetings, due to its collective positivism, heaps of appreciations, and 2-3 hours of focused mutual empowerment, will have everyone focused on seeing and uncovering the greatness instead of what’s unsavory in their fellow humans, and having it returned likewise many folds over. Like ripples in still water; the positivism rises and multiplies creating a vortex of energy enveloping and affecting everyone within its sphere of influence.

Well, truth be told, this may not be a norm in ALL Toastmasters clubs, since there are over 12,000 Toastmasters clubs on this planet, but ever since I first stepped inside the club in 2008 it never failed to produce this kind of result.

Our last meeting was no exception.

Choosing District 87’s theme for the year: Dare to Shine, we chose the word of the day ‘Extraordinary’ with the intent of installing the new Executive Committee members into office. As the day of the meeting drew closer, for some mysterious reasons 5 of the 7 EXCOM members were called away out of town, out of the country, to a wedding preparation. Furthermore, the other members were occupied with the delightful consequence of living in a beautiful holiday destination like Bali during peak season: having to entertain out-of-town vacationing friends and relatives.

Albeit the low attendance, Toastmasters and delightful guests and pressed on.

The executive officer installation was canceled, but the theme was kept.

The meeting was opened by the new club president: Amran Hidayat, who’s trying the size of his new shoes. It didn’t take him long to demonstrate his charisma and powerful presence; that’s why he’s the president.

Toastmaster of the Meeting Miranda explained the theme briefly, saying that if we, ordinary people, put a little extra care, effort and attention to anything we do, the result would be extraordinary. When that’s done on a regular basis, then shining would not be a required effort, it wouldn’t be a matter of daring to shine, rather, simply a consequence of putting in the extras. With that she asked the audience to commit to doing things with extra care, extra attention and extra effort so that all would enjoy an extraordinary meeting.

Novi began the meeting in earnest by leading the Table Topic Session. Stefani, the first Table Topic Speaker spoke about what she would do if she woke up alone in the dessert during a beautiful time of the day. Stefani struggled slightly with the answer but finished it gracefully as her Toastmaster experience got her thinking on her feet.

Faisal, our long lost member spoke about the present reality of the dreams he had as a child. He spoke eloquently about how his dreams had shifted and grown over the years. Then with great passion he shared the wonderful things he’s now experiencing in life as the result of having dared to dream.

To the question ‘what is your opinion about white lies’ Amran the president said: “Sometimes we need to a be a white-lier if we don’t want to hurt someone we love or care about”. He made us reflect on the merits of such deeds.

Izul, our delightful english teacher guest, was asked if he were a superhero what superpower would he like to have. His “To be a superhero I must eat a lot of Supermie" (a brand of instant noodles) drew instant laughter. He went on to say: “As a superhero, my power would be the ability to make people always says ‘yes’”. He demonstrated this power by rapidly firing a series of questions to Amran which Amran could only say ‘yes’ to.

The prepared speech session was initiated by Michele, who did her 5th project Your Body Speaks. An eloquent native speaker Michele has a well modulated voice that is easy on the ears. She spoke on her discovery of a modality using chakra healing which in her opinion can help people heal their emotional scars instantly. Michele was evaluated by Ina who commended her on her good gestures and interesting topic.Ina suggested that Michele looked at the audience more peripherally instead of focusing on one side of the room and to take into consideration the wooden parquet floor which make loud clacking noise from the wooden heels she had on.

Novie followed with her 6th project Vocal Variety speaking on how motorbike accidents were not only what she often witnessed, but had had personally experienced. It only cost her Rp. 30,000 to repair the bike but a whopping Rp.15,000,000 to have her shoulder operation as a result from the motorbike accident. “Unlike cancers and heart attacks which can come out of the blue, motorbike accident is something that you can prevent by wearing helmets, riding carefully and simply complying with the traffic regulations”. Novi was impressive on her use of poignant pauses which really drove the message home, as well as on her utilization of effective contrasts in volume, cadence, pace and pitch. A beautiful and rich speech, indeed. Amran evaluated Novi, and suggested that to accentuate some points, she could use more gestures and body movements, - which, in her focus on vocal variety seemed to have gone missing.

Miranda did Robert Browning’s ‘My Last Duchess’ monodrama for her Interpretive Reading project. This project requires that she analyzes, interprets, plans and reads the literary work using mostly vocal variety to convey the actor/writer’s intention and emotions behind the writing. She was evaluated by Olga who said while it was hard to evaluate such unfamiliar form of communication that involved totally new skills, she enjoyed the reading and considered Miranda’s use of pauses really effective. She suggested that Miranda allowed the evaluator to read the work in advance to better evaluate the delivery.

Our last speaker was a late addition to the roster of speakers. Yudha is a member of the newly chartered Magical-Bali TMC. Not one to shy away from challenge, Yudha agreed to do give his Ice Breaker Speech on the day of the meeting, at the wee hours, in the aftermath of the Germany-Spain World Cup semi-final. But what a speech it was! Titled ‘Dancing with the Orang Utan’ Yudha was so nimble on his feet throughout the whole speech (a fact, he later admitted, resulting from his nervousness) he appeared dancing. He spoke of his experiences and fond memories working as a vet to rehabilitate the Orang Utans in the forests of Borneo. He opened his speech with “Do you know that animals can talk to you?” and ended the speech with a blow kiss when he had to say goodbye to the Orang Utans. The audience was thoroughly entertained and touched by the speech. Yudha was evaluated by Michele. Duly impressed by Yudha’s natural delivery skills, she considered them far beyond what’s required for an ice breaker speaker.

Yudha was Best Speaker, Amran Best Evaluator, and Izul the first time guest, was Best Table Topic Speaker. The President awarded them with tokens of appreciation from the Club.

With only 7 members and 6 guests present, President Amran in his closing remark felt that everyone had put that extra effort, care and attention resulting in an extraordinary meeting. Indeed, once again, it was another uplifting Toastmasters meeting filled with warmth, laughter, appreciation, encouragement and the exhilarating joy of being with likeminded people who share the passion to learn.

The Magic Continues....

Meeting Commentary
Magical –Bali Toastmasters Club Meeting July 3rd.

The Magic Continues….

This meeting is actually the true ‘first’ meeting of the new club, and what an outrageous meeting it was, fun, dynamic, high energy.

Whereas at the previous meeting the meeting preparation and all the leadership roles were performed by the members of Bali TMC, its sponsoring/mother club, preparations were made so that as many roles as possible would be undertaken by Magical-Bali Toastmasters.

Miranda, MBTC President, opened the meeting. She confessed to still being in a state of disbelief that the number of attendants, over 25 people in three consecutive meetings, was becoming a norm rather than a fluke.

She introduced the five guests: Ana and Alexandra decided to come after receiving numerous invitations through Facebook, Erry, Yanti and Dina were invited by Melki and Verga, MBTC members.

The Word of the Day ‘Outrageous’ combined with the, yes, a mundane yet effective theme ‘Yes We Can’ helped set the mood and tone of the meeting.

The seasoned Toastmaster of the Meeting, Immediate Past President of Bali TMC, Ina Jones, led the meeting superbly, keeping the meeting upbeat.

The meeting was opened with the Table Topic Session, led by Yudha, our VPE Yudha who came to me twice to be mentored as Table Topic Master. His effort to prepare, combined with his jovial personality successfully drew eager volunteers from the pool of new members and guests to rise to the challenge of impromptu speaking.

Melki, our newest member took the first question: ‘If you were to win a prize for a trip to Tibet or South Africa, which one would you choose?’. He chose Tibet because he wanted to meet with Dalai Lama.
Eris, our VPPR took the second question: ‘Where do you prefer to take your vacation’, answering she chose the mountain as it brought back memory of the time she was a university student when she would camp every weekend and went straight to the university from the camping ground at the foot of Mount Merapi in Central Java.
Yanti, our first time guest, who came to the meeting invited by another guest answered the question: ‘If you could chose to be a president or a movie star, which would you choose’. With a obvious enthusiasm she answered she would rather be not a movie star but superstar.
To the question: ‘What’s the most outrageous traditional food you’ve ever had?’ Michele, an American and a BTC member said she couldn’t pass this question, and thus recounted her experience eating dog satays.
Grace, one of the newer members, and organic farming advocate answered the question: ‘If you’re given one hour to speak to President SBY, what would you tell him about Indonesia’. She said that Indonesia should be an agriculturist country and then proceeded to explain why with very convincing stats and facts.
Alexandra, a guest, took on the question: ‘What was your most unforgettable romantic moment?’. Being a car racer, her romantic moments all involved car races and male racers, whereby not only, once, but five times, five boyfriends had given her most unforgettable romantic moments.

Next, the Prepared Speech Session.

The first three speakers gave their Ice Breaker Speeches.
Diana, one of the young leaders in the vegetarian movement in Indonesia spoke about the benefits of being a Vegetarian and gave a highly persuasive argument on why being a vegetarian can save our planet and our pockets. Diana spoke with the ease of someone who is truly passionate about what she believes in. She was confident and has strong pleasant voice. She was evaluated by Strong who commented on her strong points and pointed out that the speech would be more effective if Diana could tell the audience what benefits she herself had experienced from being a vegetarian.

Dayu Sasih, the dog lover spoke about her best friend, Kriwil, her dog and what they have in common with each other; one of them is their love for Kerupuk (crackers). She spoke with a lot of enthusiasm and passion that the love and affection she has for Kriwil felt very palpable. Dayu prepared well for her speech as it showed in the organization and the flow of the speech. She was evaluated by Cakra who suggested that she used project more power through her voice.

Sri Fatmawati, gave a speech on her experience being a new student at John Robert Powers, a grooming and personality development school. She used proper gestures, vocal variety, facial expressions and purposeful movements so naturally, making her story very vivid and enjoyable to listen to. She was evaluated by Miranda who commended her for incorporating all the delivery tools so effectively. She suggested that next time Sri could forgo the notes - which she held in her hand the whole time, when it was obvious that she didn’t need it.

Rani, doing her second project in succession, gave a very inspiring and motivating speech titled 'Be 100% in Whatever You’re Doing'. Her speech was very affecting that the topic was adopted as the sub-theme of the meeting and was referred to often. She was evaluated by Michele who praised Rani highly on her confident delivery and superb organization, as well as the excellent examples used to support her main points. She suggested that Rani could have employed more questions to connect with the audience.

Miranda closed the prepared speech session with an Interpretive Reading project titled: A Jealous God. The project required that she utilize an array of vocal variety to interpret the various emotions and feelings the author tried to convey through the poem about a God who would not cease seducing and yanking His beloved back to Him until He is the only one loved. Noni evaluated her saying that Miranda had used the vocal variety very effectively, and that by listening to Miranda’s rendition of the poem she really ‘get’ what the poem tried to convey. She suggested that Miranda expanded on her introduction of the speech so that the audience was better informed about the intent of the poem, thus can enjoy it more.

Purnawan the ballot counter announced the most voted on: Alexandra – Best Table Topic Speaker, Rani – Best Speaker, Michele – Best Evaluator.

The Executive Committee was then introduced, Miranda – President, Yudha – VP Education, Purnawan – VP Membership, Eris – VP Public Relations, Rani – Secretary, Yuni – Treasurer, Ari Susanti – Sergeant of Arms. A friendly and laughter-filled banter ensued as the officers explained what their jobs are.

The meeting was concluded with guest comments that found the Toastmasters meeting extremely enjoyable and educative. Three guests will join as members.

The word of the day ‘OUTRAGEOUS’, was used a total of 32 times throughout the meeting.

The members had their first official photo taken. All in all, it was an outrageous, fun, exhilarating and exiting meeting.

Speaking Your Way Towards Magical Transformation

This is a commentary for a very special Toastmasters meeting – A Toastmasters Seminar “Speaking Your Way towards Magical Transformation combined with a demo meeting. It took place at Kopi Bali House in Sanur, Bali on June 5, 2010
Jerry Jones, our Sergeant of Arms opened the meeting at 10 a.m. sharp, informing the audience that the meeting will commence in 10 minutes as some of our key role takers were still on the way.TOASTMASTERS SEMINAR Arlan Setiawan DTM, our Division Governor, begantheseminar with the story of how he climbed up the success ladder through honing and developing his communication skills. He spoke of his communication mentor, the Robert-Kiyosaki look-a-like Japanese boss, who instilled in him the importance and passion for communication. Arlan, an extremely quiet man who usually only says yes or no, learned to become a very successful salesperson, and subsequently built his multi-million, multi-national petrochemical equipment company based on his communication skills. He credited Toastmasters for most of his success in the business world. Very recently in Singapore, the presentation skills learned in Toastmasters had earned him a country distributorship of new highly priced andprestigious products many bonafide compatitors had vied for.

This soft spoken 60-year-old man captivated the audience with his storytelling skills. He drew quite big laughs throughout his speech. He drew a particular huge laugh from the audience when he mentioned that his unofficial title in the industry is “The Quick Erection Specialist”… for his expertise on erecting scaffolds quickly.
His inspiring quote: “Your destiny is not written for you, but by you” made notable impact on the audience; it drew many murmurs repeating and commenting on the quote. A very fine speech indeed.

Next, Ritchie Chong DTM, district 51 District Governor delivered an inspiring, moving and eloquent speech on why and how Toastmasters inspired him and made him a better communicator and leader which helped him tremendously in his profession and success as the Chief Steward and Instructor of Malaysian Airlines.
He first joined Toastmasters because he thought it was a fun place to
be, much like the environment of the service industry he belongs to, where people are positive and friendly. As it turned out Toastmasters offered so much more than he expected.

He expanded on examples of how Toastmasters leaders brings out the best in its members; how members not only developed themselves, but in turn, through Toastmasters learning by doing method, also naturally and organically learn to extend support to the development of other members in their growth and development as communicators, as leaders, and as human beings in
general.
Ritchie’s passion and love for Toastmasters is palpable throughout his speeches as well as his attitude and conduct as he spent two precious days with us. He ended his speech by presenting the Outstanding Toastmaster pins to the President and Vice President Education of Bali Toastmasters Club, Ina Jones and Miranda Suryadjaja respectively.

TOASTMASTERS DEMO MEETINGToastmaster of the Meeting, BTC president Ina Jones greeted the audience and explained about what would transpire in the next session. She introduced the General Evaluator, Ritchie Chong who then invited his team of evaluators to introduce themselves and their roles: Michele Cempaka as Grammarian, Vaughan Hatch as Ah-Counter, Jerry Jones as Timer and Cakra Sudarsana as Ballot Counter.

PREPARED SPEECH SESSIONAgung Prianta, our newest member opened the session with his speech from the Competent Communication basic manual project 3 on How to Get to the Point with a speech called ‘The Struggle to Grow’. An inspiring speech about not being afraid to work hard as it usually pays off eventually in unexpected ways. Agung spoke about feeling like an alien when at 15, without speaking a word of English he was thrown in an English-speaking school in Singapore and had to learn it very fast if he wanted to stop being laughed at by his classmates. Agung exuded poise and confidence previously lacking in his earlier speech.
Agung was followed by Reskiana Ramli, the club’s newest CC, taking a shot at her first speech from an Advanced Manual, Interpretive Reading. She read a hilarious human interest story from ‘Hong Kong On the Air’, the book that her husband wrote. The story was about a Bra Company.

TABLE TOPIC/IMPROMPTU SPEAKING SESSION

Amran Hidayat led this 1-2 minute Impromptu Speaking Session; usually the most entertaining session of a Toastmasters meeting, as the questions usually are interesting, funny and unexpected. Although small in stature, Amran filled the room with his baritone voice, which is a huge asset in public speaking. The table topic speakers, picked randomly from the audience, drew even more interesting and
unexpected responses, often ended up with gales of laughter.

The first person picked was Jerry Jones, our Sergeant of Arms and the president’s other half. He was given a topic on the child who was not allowed to drink coffee by his parents. Jerry made the audience laughed numerous times with child-parent dialogue and voice impersonation.

Next came Guffron, the Marketing and Sales Manager from the currently developed The Seminyak, was asked to talk about hotel sales. Guffron was definitely in his element, his sales pitch flowed confidently and effortlessly.
Derry Hasibuan, Sales Manager from Hatten Wines was given a topic on how to sell Kopi Luwak. Derry's smooth delivery belied the nervousness he felt, as he later told us.

Ari Susanti Personal Assistant from Hatten Wines was invited to answer the next question, which was about being a teacher, she did very well, despite appearing rather nervous when speaking in front of a room full of strangers.
Nyoman Suwidjana, deputy chairman of Bali Tourism Board was utterly surprised when asked to come forward. He came on stage bringing his bag along with glasses in his hand, which drew amused laughter from the audience. Nyoman was asked to speak as a bungee jumping instructor trying to calm a student who didn’t want to jump after she had gone up to the jumping board. Nyoman was being his most persuasive self, using soothing voice, facial expression and calming words to change the distraught student’s mind. The audience enjoyed huge laughs from Nyoman’s delivery.

The last impromptu speaker was Paul Widhi, assistant Sales Manager from Bir Bintang. He had to persuade a shoe salesperson to hold the shoes he wanted while he went home to look for the money. Widhi went all out and enacted a whole script that resulted in him being overtime. He entertained the audience with his creative
expressions and acting.

EVALUATION SESSION.

The General Evaluator Ritchie Chong came back on stage and began this session with the speech evaluation.

In her debut as an evaluator, Novi Gehlen evaluated Agung. Novi gave a well-structured and encouraging evaluation of Agung. She found that Agung was notably more confident and relaxed as he spoke this time. She suggested that Agung try to
minimize pacing forward and backward so much, as well as to manage the timing better so that he could utilize the time allotted to give more of the story instead of stopping short of the minimum time requirement. Novi did very well as a first time evaluator.
Carlo Warella with his deep booming baritone voice we all love so much evaluated Reski. Carlo said that he really liked the story. He read a few paragraphs from the story that particularly impacted him. He suggested that this entertaining story would be more alive if Reski step out from behind the lectern and use more expressive gestures as well as interact more with the audience as she read. Carlo was particularly impressed by the quote used at the end: ‘In Hong Kong everyone walks slow and talks fast’, which he considered as a powerful way to close the speech.
The Grammarian Michele did an extremely wonderful job noting down incorrect grammar and pronunciation usage from all the speakers as well as giving suggestions for improvements. She also took note and mentioned some good use of words and particularly well-phrased sentences. Our District Governor was extremely impressed with Michele’s performance as a Grammarian and wished that he could join our club if distance was not an issue to benefit from such high quality grammar evaluation.
Vaughan did his first role as an Ah-counter and did a great job noting down the number of times speakers used ah’s and um’s, repeated words, awkward pauses, other unnecessary filler words as well as uses of the word of the day – magical. This role definitely will challenge your listening skills to the hilt, and Vaughan certainly listened very well.

The General Evaluator mentioned that Timer is a role whose import
ance is often overlooked. Indeed, it is fact that a Toastmasters meeting cannot happen unless there’s a timer. Jerry, the timer, was highly praised for his exacting timing.

Ritchie, as GE, showed us how a proper general evaluation should be done. He did a really thorough evaluation of the meeting, none like our club had ever seen before; every role was evaluated including the table topic speakers, which we never evaluated on before. We will definitely incorporate this to our future meetings, as it makes perfect sense; a table topic speaker, usually guests, could easily feel left out from not being given a feedback on how they do while every other role-taker is evaluated. And it is a known fact that the experience of receiving a positive and constructive feedback/evaluation is what brings people back to Toastmasters again and again.
As for other roles, he suggested that Ina as TOM elaborate more information about the speakers when she introduces speakers. Amran as Topicsmaster was given suggestions to give simpler and more general questions which are easy to answer without leaving room for misinterpretation. Ritchie lauded high praises for the superb performance of all attending Bali Toastmasters Club members and thank them for staging such a smoothly run and highly energetic public event.

Throughout the meeting, after each session, the audience had been asked to vote for the best speaker, best table topic speaker, and best evaluator. The ballot counter, Cakra, collected and tallied the votes and announced the winners; they were
respectively: CC Reskiana Ramli, Toastmaster-to-be Nyoman Suwidjana and CC Carlo Warella. President Ina Jones presented each of the winners a pen with Toastmasters insignia.

After the wrap up of the demo meeting, the 2009-2010 Executive Committee members were presented by the president, a Question and Answer session for the guests ensued.
Thus ended a truly magical meeting, thanks to the great work of members of Bali Toastmasters Club, a superb cooperation by Kopi Bali House, and most definitely the inspiring and powerful speeches by our visiting distinguished Toastmasters, Arlan Setiawan DTM, division G Division Governor and Ritchie Chong DTM, district 51 District Governor.

At the end of the meeting 12 guest signed up as members with more to follow. We're well on our way towards chartering a new club in Bali, to be called Magical-Bali Toastmasters Club

The meeting.... C'est Formidable....

We had a truly FORMIDABLE meeting last Saturday, February 27th at Sector.
Or like the French love to say it: Le meeting... c'est FORMIDABLE!!

Formidable was the Word of the Day and it quickly became the most used word as those present tried the word and found it fun and appropriate to use throughout the meeting.

As we had only 2 speakers, Vaughan and Miranda, there was plenty of time for Table Topic Session. All guests had a chance to speak, and it was a very fun and funny session, lots of laughter, as the Topicsmaster, Ina, skillfully led the session with thought provoking questions.

Vaughan did his 3rd speech (already !!! - in the span of 6 weeks) on the uniqueness on Selonding gamelan, using visual aids even though it wouldn't be until project 8 before he's supposed to learn how to employ it. The topic was very interesting, the opening was unexpected, as he let the audience listen to the selonding gamelan music for several minutes before he introduced his speech.

Miranda did her 18th project from the Story Telling Advanced Communication Manual. Drawing from her personal experience, Miranda spoke about the importance of showing and telling those you love that you love them, how much they meant to you, and let them know you're sorry if you'be done them wrong while they're STILL ALIVE, and not until it's too late to matter, when they're gone forever.

Vaughan was chosen the Best Speaker.

The Table Topics was started with the question on how to convince the people in Bali to allow the creation of a Nudist colony. Femke from Stenden University volunteered to be the first impromptu speaker. She did it with ease, delightful imagination and a healthy dose of humor, causing the audience to laugh really hard at some of her suggestions. Ken was given the topic on having an imaginative conversation with Osama Ben Laden; what he would say to the big bad man. He was quite creative in his questions and comments to Osama, also eliciting a lot of laughter from the audience. Zachary was asked about his favorite place to visit and spoke about the Tower of Terror in Dysneyland. He was very imaginative, enthusiastic and vivid in his description and persuasiveness about why everyone should pay a visit to the Tower of Terror. Anya was asked about what she would do if she was having dinner with Orlando Bloom, but had to leave the table because she had a tummy trouble and had to go to the loo immediately. Ivan told us about his 3 most favorite gadgets. Jeanne, Novie, Sekar, Aninditha and Ida also had a go at the Table Topic Session to the merriment of all.

Young Zachary was chosen as the Best Table Topic Speaker.

Evaluators were Ina and Carlo.
Carlo with his thorough evaluation of Miranda's speech and especially with his booming voice was voted the Best Evaluator.

Noni was finding her form again as TOM now that she's been coming regularly to the club again.
Stefanie did an excellent job as first time General Evaluator. Her assistants:
Michele as Grammarian, Anya as Ah-oh counter, Ivan as Timer and Vaughan as the Ballot Counter, all did such great jobs that help make the meeting enjoyable and smooth running.
Ina did a truly great job leading a very creative Table Topic Session, with a lot of thought provoking questions

All in all there were 18 people attending, 9 members and 9 non members. Wonderful turnout, really fun and uplifting.
The meeting was adjourned slightly before 5 pm. Jeanne, Ken, Femke, Miranda, Ina, Anya and Vaughan continued on for another hour enjoying dusk, dinner and various discussions at the Sector veranda, overlooking the vast expanse of well tended golf course/park.

Words Have Power

We had had fabulous meetings, amazing meetings... but this last one on Feb. 18th was truly extraordinary...

It proved that words have power. Extraordinary being the Word of the Day set the mood and defined the atmosphere of the meeting.

The meeting was opened at 7 p.m. sharp.

Carlo, did an exemplary job as TOM (Toastmaster Of the Meeting/MC), showing us how to master the ceremony properly. His booming baritone voice was music to our ears, and so wonderful to hear it again after an extended absence. His liberal use of the Word of the Day was contagious, resulting in repeated use by all the members except one or two, including yours truly.

Attended by sixteen people: 14 members, 1 Toastmasters guest and 1 member to be, the energy, the power and the attention to the meeting was so extraordinary, that everyone left the meeting feeling happy and uplifted.

The program was commenced by Table Topic session led by Noni. It was a fun one, with a variety of real life topics for the speakers to ponder upon. The impromptu speakers were Cok Ratih, Suardana, Karen, Amran & Miranda Karen did a superb job telling us, and showing us, what to do if we're being followed by a robber. It was extremely entertaining that Karen was voted as the Best Table Topic Speaker.

We had four prepared speakers, Vaughan, Nanda, Cok Ratih and Carol... and what GREAT speeches they delivered. Each topic was interesting, rich in content and well thought out.

Doing his second project about 'How to organize your speech' Vaughan spoke eloquently and expressively about the rising price of land in Bali, and magically, his ah/ers were almost non-existent now. It just shows that the quickest cure to speech distractors is to be made aware of them. Vaughan is definitely a formidable speaker in the making.

Also doing her second project, Nanda was and is, as she claimed, a born marketer... always seeing business opportunity in anything she laid eyes on or thought of. Her humorous entrepreneurial anecdotes kept us in stitches. Another potential great speaker to keep a watch on.

Cok Ratih did her 6th project - How to use Vocal Variety. Cok was poised and eloquent in her delivery about Rabies and the Bali Dogs. She used the vocal variety superbly, combining the use of finger clicking to raised voice calling or reprimanding dogs. She has continuously demonstrated impressive progress from one project to the next, and this last speech was done with hardly any mentoring, which made it doubly impressive.

Carol, our visiting Toastmaster, showed us her experience and expertise in crafting a speech. Employing superb delivery techniques, her speech on the history and benefits of Montessori Education was moving and truly awe-inspiring. It was a hard choice to choose the Best Speaker between the four speakers, but Nanda won by a slight margin over the other three. Well done, Nanda!!!

The evaluators: Amran, Adi, Strong and Reski were no less formidable. They have raised the bar on the quality of the club's level of evaluation. Everyone took their role seriously and put a lot of effort to encourage and motivate the speakers.

I have to say though that Reski had the hardest job; it could be intimidating evaluating a seasoned speaker like Carol who has been a Toastmasters longer than any of our members, and whose occupation as a teacher no doubt gives Carol plenty of opportunities to practice. Undaunted, like every other role she took on, Reski, gave her all and gave an eloquent evaluation, detailing Carol's strengths as well as giving her a suggestion of improvement.

Reski won the Best Evaluator, and deservedly so.

Suzanne was General Evaluator and did an amazing job. Showing a propensity to details and precision, Suzanne once again exemplified what good, effective general evaluating should be.

Grammarian was Karen. It was such a perfect task for Karen who majored in English. Our club is so lucky to have a grammarian of Karen's calibre who not only has superb listening skills, but also can provide such thorough evaluation of our grammatical errors and to show how they can be corrected.

As promised, the meeting was adjourned at exactly 8.30 p.m. It shows that where there is determination and effort, we can conquer jam karet also known as Bali Rubber Time.

Stay tuned more our next meeting commentaries.... Or better still, come and check out the meetings...

Fabulous New Year Meeting

Happy New Year to you All.

2010 promises to be a FABULOUS Bali Toastmasters Year.

It started with a BANG, literally, as the electricity went out soon after we convened and began our dinner.

In Toastmasters one of the things a leader quickly learns is to stay CALM and COOL no matter what happens. So a quick phone call from Miranda to Carolina (LINA) Wijaya from SECTOR Bali Beach Golf Course secured us a conference room at Sector to conduct our meeting.

THANK YOU SO MUCH LINA, you saved us from having to cancel our meeting when we have the most members present!

After finishing our dinner in the dimming twilight, we packed our bags and Toastmasters paraphernalia and headed towards SECTOR, which was conveniently located a mere 5 minutes away.

As it happened, Thursday Night Salsa at Sector was also happening… translated: live band playing at full volume....but our show must go on.

So in spite and despite of the loud Salsa beat playing next door and a late start, Ina Jones, the club president, opened the meeting with great spirit, reminding us that this was a perfect opportunity to practice projecting our voice to rise over the commotion of the music.

Hence, loud music and all, Toastmaster SURYA Paramartha as our first prepared speaker gave his first Toastmasters speech ever, the ICE BREAKER. He delivered a well prepared speech about his life prior to the life of a salaried man now working at his father’s recruitment agency. Usually quiet and timid Surya regaled us in his fluent English the detailed account of his first passion, MUSIC. It was hard to imagine the clean-cut, well-groomed Surya as a longhaired rocker. Well done, Surya! Congratulations on a well executed Ice Breaker.

Surya was evaluated by CC ELLEN, a last minute replacement for Toastmaster Amran who at the last minute could not make it to the meeting. In delivering the verbal evaluation, Ellen was all joy and enthusiasm, which of course was a joy to behold.

The second speaker was Toastmaster Candra ADIputra, giving his 4th speech project after a 6 month absence. His speech title is THE PRINCE, a discourse on the book by Niccolo MACHIAVELLI under the same title. He enthralled and shocked us with the controversial Machiavellian views and approaches to life and politics. He kept the audience at the edge of their seats with jaws hanging as he deliberately and expertly steered us to adopt his personal views on the subject. Well-prepared, technically superb and highly captivating, Adi’s speech showed his growing maturity and mastery as a great speaker. Being a seasoned debater, in the past Adi’s speeches had been strongly influenced by debating techniques, resulting in a rather theatrical and overpowering delivery. He managed to par this down while still retaining the positive aspects, making his recent speech simply eloquent, elegant and truly enjoyable. Bravo Adi!

His speech was evaluated by CC OLGA who did a wonderful evaluation full of praises and encouragement.

Toastmaster MICHELE Cempaka did her 4th speech project titled ENERGY. Having done 3 speeches in quick succession, Michele continued to demonstrate remarkable improvement as a highly gifted speaker. Her well-written, well-prepared speech was delivered with poise, confidence and charm. Her gentle manner did not distract from the strength and power of her message. She succeeded in leading the audience to participate in a short energy meditation while the loud music continued to roar outside.

Michele was evaluated by CC Cakra who got carried away evaluating that he went over the allotted time.

Toastmaster RESKI, the fourth and last speaker, chose the topic DETECTING BREAST CANCER for her 7th speech project. Being totally awesome and courageous for choosing such a delicate subject, she shocked us further by instructing all of us, men and women, to stand up and examine our breasts. Toastmaster ADI was beside himself with embarrassment as we were directed to examine our breasts thoroughly. He found it hard to believe that breast cancer could inflict men as well as women.

Reski was evaluated by CC Strong, who evaluated with such flair and humor while thoroughly enjoying reconstructing the breast examination scene to drive his points home.

Given the choice of four such gifted speakers and such diverse interesting topics, understandably it was a tough decision to choose a winner. However, the audience votes decided that Toastmaster ADI was the BEST SPEAKER while CC Strong was voted the BEST EVALUATOR .

Next was the TABLE TOPIC Session, led by Toastmaster COK RATIH, our celebrity dancer extraordinaire.
Choosing the general theme GO GREEN, the questions revolved around environmental issues, with the exception of our guest EVIE HATCH, who, being a fellow Balinese dancer like Cok Ratih was given the question about Legong Dance. Evie did not only give a perfectly reasonable answer, she also spoke eloquently, confidently and with a lot of poise and charm. Deservedly, she was voted the BEST TABLE TOPIC SPEAKER.

Other Table Topic Speakers were VAUGHN HATCH, FAISAL, ELLEN, and a father-daughter duet STRONG and STEFANI who had us laughing in stitches with their comical responses.

Finally, as a part of her Competent Leader projects, Miranda gave a presentation from the Toastmasters Leadership Excellence Series titled MOTIVATING PEOPLE. Understanding the art of motivating people is one of the most valuable skills a leader must acquire. She gave many examples and analogies to illustrate the points. The audience was then asked to identify their own primary motivators.

TOM (Toastmaster of the Meeting) Ina did an excellent job MC-ing and leading the meeting, showing complete ease, good humor and complete control over the unusual situation. By being the TOM she had more opportunities than anyone else to use the word fabulous, our word of the day, thus used the word liberally with such glee. Though inconvenient and distracting, the loud music didn’t seem to seriously bother any of the other leaders and speakers, everyone doing their jobs whole-heartedly and superbly.

All in all, the atmosphere remain positive throughout, everyone was in jolly good spirit during the meeting that ended at 10pm, and left the meeting feeling SIMPLY FABULOUS – definitely an auspicious beginning to a great NEW YEAR.

Once again MANY THANKS to LINA from SECTOR for her quick decision that made this meeting possible.

And for all of who attended, THANK YOU, for making this meeting a truly FABULOUS MEETING.

For those who didn’t come but wanted to come… what are you waiting for? Join us at our next meeting, January 21st. Stay tune for further notification and updates.

Toast to you all!
Miranda Suryadjaja, CC, CL
